This is so true for a whole assortment of things but I’ve never been able to put it into words. Like when people find out I’m queer and they suddenly act less homophobic. I have relatives who magically stop showing their racist tendencies around people of color. Just because you don’t display your prejudice around the people you’re prejudiced against doesn’t make you a good person - it still means you’re shitty, but also extra shitty because you realize your behavior is offensive and you only display it around people who won’t be immediately harmed.

photographer Yume Cyan has been shooting some magical long exposure photographs of fireflies in a forested area around Nagoya City, Japan. By keeping the camera’s shutter open at a low aperture Cyan captures every bioluminescent flash of each insect resulting in dotted light trails that criss-cross the frame.

ELSIPOGTOG, NEW BRUNSWICK – A sacred fire, which must burn continuously and be monitored for four days, has been lit by Mi’kmaq peoples from all corners of traditional Mi’kma’ki, who have gathered in the New Brunswick community of Elsipogtog. They, as well as non-Indigenous peoples from the local communities and beyond, have now begun to congregate in a field – with permission given by the owner – adjacent to the junction of highway 126 and highway 116 west.

The gathering, which now comprises about 40 people, is directly in the path of seismic testing trucks – or “thumpers” – that are conducting geological surveying on behalf of SWN Resources Canada. SWN is exploring for shale gas deposits. Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples worry that the seismic testing will lead to hydraulic fracturing – or fracking – of Kent County, much of which is under exploratory lease to SWN.

Elsipogotg war chief John Levi has noted that the gathering will remain peaceful, but that the seismic testing will not be allowed to continue past the sacred fire.

“We’re not going to let them pass. This is the reason why we’ve set up,” Levi told the Halifax Media Co-op. “We’ve made our sacred fire. We’re going to stand our ground here. This would be the spot here, so we’re asking for support from all non-Native and Native peoples.”

They WANT to stomp our asses, and have been pushing for a confrontation for over a year now. It started with Attawapiskat and has escalated since.

They will happily kill some of us to put us in our place.

This is real.

I know we’re a mild-mannered people, politically, but come on, Canada. We’re meant to be a progressive, partially socialist society. You can make it here as a cishet white dude whose family was here before John A Macdonald, and you can make it as a first generation refugee, so why the hell are our government and our society treating the First Nations people like lepers and cattle and children, irritants whose voices don’t matter and whose very genes are somehow unclean?

What kind of society has universal health care, the most diverse city on the planet, and still systematically propagates adversity and stigma against its oldest and most hard-done-by community? One in which we can’t be bothered to tell the world we care, and so events like this are forgotten.

I want the actor to inhabit the role in a way that is entirely their own while still respecting the essence of the character. That takes creativity, brains and heart – the rest is superfluous. Arguing about the sex and/or ethnicity of the character misses the point. It’s the energy that matters –an intellectual curiosity, an individual flair. All that’s required of the audience is an open mind. Doctor Who is a show that forces you to re-examine your perceptions because the character and his companions are constantly changing. This is the kind of thinking I see a lot, even from people who consider themselves staunch feminists, or at the very least allies for our cause. It doesn’t matter if the Doctor is a woman or a POC or not, they say, as long as they are the best person for the role.

The problem is that this type of thinking assumes that the world we live in is a meritocracy, where the person who is best suited for the job gets it. Except anyone who is a woman, especially a WOC, knows that’s the exact opposite of the world we live in.

I am not receiving updates on the Doctor Who casting, so I can’t tell you with certainty what it is like, but if recent speculation is anything to go by, it’s seems pretty certain that women are not being seriously considered for the role. And after 50 years and 11 men, it’s just not possible that the Doctor hasn’t been a woman because they couldn’t find any talented actresses (Doctor as woman reimagined article). Women have systematically been overlooked for the role of the Doctor.

Furthermore, this type of thinking sets up a false dichotomy. Either the Doctor becomes a woman solely to please the feminist brigade (essentially, tokenism), or we find the “best” actor for the role. But women have so much to offer to the role of the Doctor. They too can recreate the role in a way that is entirely their own while still respecting the essence of the character. Furthermore, as I’ve argued before (Narrative piece), casting a woman as the Doctor would add so much more to the character. The Doctor would be forced to face challenges he’d never experienced before. She would be able to examine the universe with an entirely different perspective. Race and gender aren’t superfluous issues. They define us in a myriad of ways every single day.

I want the Doctor to be a woman because I believe that there is a huge pool of talented actresses who are being overlooked. And I want the Doctor to be a woman because I want to see the character grow and develop in new and fascinating ways.

This is basically the problem with the entire modern educational system.

Time to do unpopular opinion? Time to do unpopular opinion.

Balancing a checkbook is applied addition and subtraction, stuff of the third grade. Okay, yeah, it is a failure of the modern educational system if he hasn’t learned it by now.

Imaginary numbers interact with real numbers (1, 2, π, 1.5, etc) for complex numbers, and are useful if you want to get into engineering or science — you know, high paying jobs.

Remember Tomb Raider? How they make her turn? Quaternions, which use THREE sets of imaginary numbers.

Like how your cell phone gets reception? That requires resonance, the understanding of which can be aided by complex numbers.

And don’t even get me started in the more exotic physics like fluid dynamics or quantum mechanics. That is, the forefront of how planes fly and how computer chips work.

There’s this term, innumeracy, that is to math what illiteracy is to english. One thing that bugs me is when ignorance is paraded about, when one acts as if math is an optional knowledge. Doubly so when it’s the very thing holding them back.

The failure is not in teaching these things, but the lack of teaching about why we should care about these things.

Come to think of it, that’s applicable to how a lot of subjects are taught.

But I’m afraid maths gets the worst of it, really. I mean, how often have you heard people complaining about history? Social sciences? Even chemistry, which is more specialised than maths? No, maths gets the worst of it by far, and everyone demonises it because no one ever tells them that maths is a language, and a quite difficult one at that, because it’s the language of the Universe (of god, if you will).

Not only that, but it’s also the only language that’s truly universal (we’re certain aliens will arrive at the same maths we have) and that can truly explain everything that’s in principle conceivable. Human language can describe the stuff we see, and some extrapolations we imagine; maths can describe everything that is, was, will be, has never been, and could ever be.

Everything is maths.
